Leadership is one of the most important factors influencing the performance of any public safety unit, from the federal government to state and local organizations. The importance of leadership skills in the growing field of public safety is so significant that increasingly law enforcement and government agencies are seeking more continuing education and formal training in security and public safety issues. The Certificate in Public Safety Leadership program focuses on developing professional competencies critical to succeeding in a range of public safety organizations, including first responders (law enforcement, fire, EMS), emergency management, and the security industry. Designed to meet the needs of those who are interested in this growing field as well as professionals already working within these organizations, students in the program will develop vital career skills including leadership and motivational best practices, critical thinking, communication techniques, and professional ethics.
Over sixteen informative evening sessions, students in the program will develop an understanding of the wide array of challenges that public safety professionals face today—and how to negotiate them successfully. Program instructors are experienced local professionals, with long backgrounds in area public safety. Their hands-on approach focuses on instructional techniques that give students the opportunity to apply cutting-edge leadership and management theory to the practical problems faced in their own public safety units and workplace environments. Through a series of lectures, exercises, guest speakers, and class discussion, students will learn best practices for how to handle the most difficult of contemporary public safety challenges. Students will be able to return to their agencies and apply the knowledge and skills they have gained to better lead their units and to better serve the public.
